Is it worth shipping my motorbike to Australia?
If you already own the motorbike, and have done so for more than 12 months, then it’s a no brainer.
Pricing of motorbikes overseas is considerably cheaper than in Australia. So if you were to take the loss on selling the bike in the foreign country you’re in, and purchase the same motorbike again on arrival in Australia, it would generally be more than the cost to ship the motorbike to Australia and pay GST/Duty.
Information about shipping motorbikes to Australia
Before you purchase your motorbike, DO NOT proceed unless you meet the following criteria.
Otherwise you will not be able to get an import permit for the motorbike, and you will not be able to uplift form the port(under any circumstances).
If you have not owned the motorbike for minimum of 12 months, and been out of Australia for that time then you are restricted to pre 1989 motorbikes.
When importing a motorbike into Australia, the first requirement is that you’re an Australian permanent resident or plan to be. For example if you’re in New Zealand and moving to Australia, they will not give you final import approval until you're in Australia and have the immigration stamp in your passport.
Only one motorbike per person is allowed which must have been owned and used by the person for 12 months, and not have been out of that country for more than 42 days in the year that you have owned it. Anyone can import a motorbike built before 1989.
You need to apply for an import permit before the motorbike leaves the country at a cost of $50 AUD.
